Charleston’s Black Food Truck Festival Is Back This April
Celebrates Our Food, Music and Culture at the Black Food Truck Festival in Charleston, SC
Have you heard of the Black Food Truck Festival (BFTF) in Charleston, SC yet? I'm headed down again April 25 - 27 for a BFTF threepeat because this is one of my favorite annual events. If you want to check out the vibes, I wrote a summary of last year’s festival to give you an idea of what to expect. This is a family-friendly event that celebrates Black culture through food and music. If that sounds familiar, it should because the weekend feels like a big family reunion even if it’s your first time attending.
Black American culture is deeply rooted in the traditions of the African diaspora, with many shared or common cultural practices in food, music, and dance. Charleston is the perfect backdrop for this event because you’ll also have an opportunity to learn more about the Gullah Geechee cultures in the area. Do y’all remember “Gullah Gullah Island” on Nickelodeon? This is the community that the show represented.
You’ll have a chance to really dive into the history of Gullah culture and our connections through out the diaspora on Friday at the BFTF Rhythm & Booze Opening Party located at the newly opened International African American Museum. Throughout the weekend there are a variety of events including a Melanin Magic workout and Afrobeats party.
The festival's founder, Marcus Hammond, said the event grows every year because the team is focused on providing a positive, memorable time for everyone. ”At BFTF we always put the attendee’s experience is at the forefront of everything we do,” said Hammond. You can always expect great food, vibes and music but there are also some new additions for 2025. “This weekend we’re kicking things off at the International African American Museum and we’ve enhanced the kids’s zone,” he stated.
This year, day parties have officially been incorporated into the festival and three bars will be on-site (up from one last year) so patrons can spend more time eating and dancing instead of standing in line. Outside of the actual festival, there’s an evening get event Friday, Saturday and Sunday with great music and karaoke.
